Oncologist talked about nicotine-containing foods

GMP News

According to the expert, some products contain nicotine in a small amount. For example, these are eggplant (about 10 ng/g), white cabbage (about 16.8 ng/g), tomatoes (from 7.1 to 7.3 ng/g), black tea (about 100 ng/g), potatoes (about 4.3 ng/g) and many others.

“Don’t be afraid to use nicotine-containing products,” the oncologist said. – “To get a dangerous dose of nicotine, you need to eat a huge amount of such products at a time, which is hardly possible. In general, it is worth noting that nicotine can reduce appetite by affecting satiety receptors in the hypothalamus. It is also believed that nicotine increases the release of endorphins, dynorphins in the spinal cord, which endows it with certain analgesic properties”. However, nicotine is still addictive and not harmless, the doctor recalled.

Contrary to popular misconception, nicotine is not the main cause of smoking-related diseases. Tobacco combustion products are the leading factors in the development of diseases. For example, the oncologist named direct exposure to tobacco smoke carcinogens as the main cause of lung cancer. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can develop from the irritating and inflammatory effects of cigarette smoke, and cardiovascular disease from the effects of combustion products on vascular coagulation and blood vessel walls.

“There are many chemicals in cigarette smoke: formaldehyde, cadmium, acrylonitrol, etc. It is they that have an impact on the disruption of DNA metabolism, which in turn leads to negative effects, including cancer of the oral cavity, cancer of the bronchial tree, cancer of the esophagus and stomach,” said Dmitry Strunkin.

The oncologist also emphasized that smoking cessation should be the basis of the treatment of any disease. And only if the patient is unable or not ready to give up the bad habit, it is reasonable to recommend him to use the concept of harm reduction, which involves switching to risk-modified products, such as tobacco heating systems. However, the decision on such a recommendation and following it always remains with the attending physician and the patient himself.

According to Olga Bykova, a clinical psychologist, full member of the All-Russian Psychotherapeutic League, leading specialist of the Vozrozhdeniye Foundation for the Rehabilitation of Addicts, often a patient who really wants to quit smoking does not receive any professional help or advice on how to overcome tobacco addiction.
